Sea turtle weighing more than 70 kg lays eggs in Hon Cau

After four times coming ashore, the mother sea turtle laid 75 eggs on the sandbank of Hon Cao Island, Tuy Phong District, in the early morning of August 26.

Mother sea turtle belongs to the species of Green Turtle (scientific name) Chelonia mydas) crawled up to dig a nest in the sand, laying 75 eggs on Trang Dao beach, at 5:30 today.

Ms. Luu Yen Phi, an officer of the conservation area, said the turtle was 97 cm long, 88 cm wide, and weighed more than 70 kg. On August 25, she and 12 people in the sea turtle protection volunteer group went on patrol and discovered the mother turtle on the island at 7 pm. “After crawling up and down four times, the mother turtle gave birth at dawn. After 30 minutes, it covered the sand with its feet and returned to the sea,” Ms. Phi said.

This morning, the group collected the eggs, brought them to the incubation area next to the patrol station on the island, and strictly protected them, waiting for the turtles to hatch.

This is the second time this year that sea turtles have laid eggs on Hon Cau Island. In early August, another sea turtle laid nearly 80 eggs on Trang Dao beach.

Over the years, Hon Cau Island has recorded many sea turtles coming to lay eggs. The eggs are brought to the incubation area and hatch well. The baby turtles are then released back into the ocean.

Hon Cau Marine Reserve covers an area of 12,500 hectares (including the island and surrounding waters). This is a provincial-level species and habitat conservation area.
