Home cinema: Sony introduces BRAVIA 8 and 9 projectors with 4K HDR laser technology and XR processor

Sony has presented its two new projectors in the range BRAVIA 8 and 9designed to “bring home a professional-grade cinematic HDR experience,” by being equipped with Sony’s XR processor and 4K HDR laser light source, delivering quality images with bright colors and deep blacks.

The company has unveiled the newest members of the BRAVIA family, which join Sony’s home cinema range of BRAVIA Series 9, 8 and 7 televisions, and BRAVIA Theatre audio products.

Specifically, as Sony has stressed, the new BRAVIA 8 and 9 projectors offer excellent image quality, colour and contrast, in order to offer professional visual quality experiences “within everyone’s reach”, whether a user is a film buff, a sports fanatic or a video game fan.

To achieve this, they have native 4K HDR laser technology and are the first in the company to use the self-developed processor for XR projectors, as Sony has specified in a statement.

With the XR processor, the projectors have four image functions. One of them is XR Dynamic Tone Mapping, which analyses brightness peaks frame by frame and, based on this, offers an optimal allocation of all of them to improve viewing and maintain bright colours.

Another feature offered by the processor is XR Deep Black, which controls laser dimming in dark scenes, providing deeper blacks while maintaining tone and color expression.

With XR TRILUMINOS PRO, the projector is able to “bring to life” more than a billion colours. It is also complemented by XR Clear Image technology, which improves all images to 4K quality, intelligently recreating lost texture and detail by comparing the images with a database.

Sony laser light

Sony also highlighted that the new BRAVIA projectors feature Sony’s laser light source, offering improved brightness in compact, lightweight designs. In the case of the BRAVIA 9 projector, the projection light reaches 3,400 lumens. The BRAVIA 8 has 2,700 lumens.

The BRAVIA 9 projector is also equipped with Live Clolour Enhancer, a technology that delivers more vivid and vibrant images for use in brighter environments.

Sony has also designed the new projectors with gamers in mind, delivering 120fps, 4K quality images with a 12ms input lag. They also feature an automatic low latency mode, available via two HDMI 2.1-compatible inputs, which delivers smooth, crisp motion, facilitating responsiveness when gaming and offering a better experience.

Sustainable and adaptable design

The technology company has also emphasised their sustainable design, as they have been manufactured with a mercury-free laser light source. Furthermore, with XR Deep Black technology, the laser output is optimally controlled frame by frame, in order to improve energy efficiency.

The projectors can be installed in complex spaces thanks to their corner keystone correction and lens shift functions, allowing them to adapt to both rooms with high ceilings and limited depth.

The new BRAVIA projectors are now available for purchase for €15,999 for the BRAVIA 8 (VPL-XW6100ES) and €25,999 for the BRAVIA 9 (VPL-XW8100ES). The BRAVIA 9 replaces Sony’s VPL-XW7000ES projector.
