IFA 2024: Why did Samsung put speakers in a photo frame?

At first glance it seems like a very simple product: a photo frame on which you can play music. It’s just nice to look at and that’s it. However, there are other reasons behind it.

A group of Latin American journalists, including The Trade met with Samsung executives at IFA 2024 to learn more about the conception of this product.

According to a study referred to by the South Korean giant, 40% of users have some type of speaker with a WiFi connection, but what is really decisive for the purchase decision is a purely aesthetic criterion: 47% of respondents think that one of the main problems with wireless speakers is that their design does not match the home decor.

The Samsung Music Frame is 32.8 cm on each side and you can put an old-fashioned photo on it: printed paper and that’s it; or you can also put a piece of art so that the decoration matches the style of the home. It even comes with a system to easily mount it on the wall, like a painting, and you can change the colors of the frame.

Samsung notes that the Music Frame has several uses beyond just being a speaker with sound coming from three speakers: it uses Dolby Atmos sound and streams music wirelessly. It can also connect to a TV and a sound bar for Q-Symphony, a technology that allows for improved sound.

However, something that was on display at Samsung’s booth at IFA 2024 is the product’s maximum capacity: Imagine a room with five of these pictures on the walls connected to the TV and working at the same time.

For now, there is no way to use it alone: it does not have a display to put a digital photo or have information about what is being played, although it is not ruled out that future versions will have one.
