Gonzalez calls on Venezuelans in a letter to “fight for democracy”

He thanks the Government of Spain for the “support and shelter” he and his family have given him “in these difficult days”

Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González has written a letter, read on Tuesday in Madrid by his daughter Carolina, in which he urges the Venezuelan population to “fight for the restoration of democracy” in the country.

Carolina González, who spoke during the opposition rally held this Tuesday in front of the Congress of Deputies, read the letter written by her father, who on Sunday flew to Spain fleeing Venezuela.

“My thanks go to all those who voted for me and also to all those who were unable to do so because of the tricks of the National Electoral Council,” said González through her daughter, while calling on the international community to “redouble its efforts to restore democracy and freedom in Venezuela.”

“The will of the people expressed on July 28 must be respected (…) María Corina and I assure you that this fight we began will continue until we achieve the goals we set for ourselves,” González added in his message, before sending a message of thanks to the Government of Spain for “its support and shelter” for him and his family “in these difficult days.”

Nearly a thousand people demonstrated on Tuesday in front of the Congress of Deputies to claim the opposition victory in the elections of July 28 in Venezuela.

Meanwhile, the House of Commons was debating a PP initiative – which will be voted on Wednesday – seeking to have the Spanish Executive recognise González as the winner and new Venezuelan president, as well as condemning the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

Venezuela held presidential elections on July 28, in which, according to authorities, Maduro won with just over 51 percent of the votes, although the opposition quickly claimed victory.

Tensions have only increased in Venezuela, especially in the first days after the elections. Meanwhile, pressure on Maduro is also mounting from abroad as the international community insists on the need to review and publish the electoral records and for the government to demonstrate transparency and evidence of its victory.
