Typhoon Yagi causes major flooding in Myanmar, at least 280 dead

Hundreds of villagers near the capital Naypyidaw are trying to flee their homes on Friday as massive flooding has hit Myanmar after Typhoon Yagi. The typhoon has already claimed at least 280 lives in Southeast Asia, where the storm has caused widespread damage in recent days.

Northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar are experiencing major flooding and landslides after Typhoon Yagi hit the countries. The typhoon brought heavy rains that have been falling on the countries since last weekend, causing widespread damage in the region.

The latest figures show at least 280 deaths, 233 of which in Vietnam. In Myanmar, the authorities have already reported 36 deaths. Several people are still missing, which means the death toll will certainly rise. Some fifty thousand people have had to leave their homes in Myanmar, and the government has set up emergency camps where they can find temporary shelter.

Soldiers have rescued several villagers living at the intersection of several rivers in the vicinity of the capital Naypyidaw. Not only houses but also banana and sugar cane plantations were flooded and badly damaged.
