General Secretary and President To Lam will attend United Nations events, work in the US and pay a state visit to Cuba.
From September 22-26, General Secretary and President To Lam and his wife will attend the Future Summit, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, work in the US and then pay a state visit to Cuba, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement today.
The visit to Cuba took place at the invitation of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez and his wife.

The Future of the United Nations Summit will take place in New York on September 22-23, ahead of the opening of the 79th UN General Assembly High-Level Week on September 24. With the theme “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future”, the conference aims to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and climate goals, agree on solutions to global challenges, and strengthen global governance.
In his message on September 12, the General Secretary and President hoped that the conference would bring new thinking and ways of doing things for the future of the world and suggested focusing on discussing transformative solutions, including transformation in science, technology and innovation, green transformation and transformation of global governance.
Vietnam and the US have just celebrated the first anniversary of upgrading their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The US is Vietnam’s second largest trading partner. In 2023, the total import-export turnover between the two countries reached nearly 111 billion USD, surpassing the 100 billion USD mark for the third consecutive time, according to the General Department of Customs.
Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 2, 1960. Cuba supported Vietnam during the years when the country was not yet unified.
Vietnam supports Cuba in developing household-scale rice production, corn and soybean production, and aquaculture. Cuba imports about 300,000 – 400,000 tons of rice from Vietnam each year. A number of Vietnamese enterprises are implementing investment projects in Cuba.
