Mr. Trump denies the possibility of running for president in 2028

“No, I wouldn’t do that. I don’t think that’s going to happen,” former US President Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast on September 22, when asked if he would run again in 2028 if he lost the race to the White House this year.

The former US president added that he hoped to “be successful” on Election Day, November 5. The US Constitution stipulates that each president can only serve a maximum of two terms, so Mr. Trump would not be allowed to run in 2028 if elected this year.

Mr. Trump, 78, the Republican candidate, is competing with his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, 59. Polls show the gap between the two candidates is very tight, including in the battleground states that often decide the election outcome.

Mr. Trump first ran for president in 2016 and defeated his Democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In 2020, he ran for re-election but lost to candidate Joe Biden.

Former President Trump refused to accept the results and claimed the election was rigged, but did not provide evidence. His supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, to prevent lawmakers from certifying Biden’s victory. The riot left six people dead and more than 170 police officers injured.

The Republican presidential candidate also recently refused to commit to unconditionally accepting this year’s election results.
