Swedish Intelligence points to Iran’s possible role in attacks on embassies in Nordic countries

The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has pointed this Thursday to the possible role played by the Iranian authorities in carrying out attacks against Israeli diplomatic legations in these territories and has drawn a parallel in the way in which Iran uses third parties to carry out their “subsidiary wars.”

Swedish Intelligence has warned that the security situation in the country remains serious, which is why it has maintained the high threat alert – which is at point 4 out of a total of 5 -, according to information collected by the Swedish newspaper ‘Svenska Dagbladet’.

This was stated by Fredrik Hallstrom, operational director of the Security Police, in a meeting with the Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strommer, and the director of the National Operational Department (NOA), Johan Olsson. All of them have clarified that the approach is “similar to Iran’s way of acting through criminal gangs.”

“There are things that could point in that direction, partly due to the choice of objectives but also due to the modus operandi,” he pointed out.

The authorities of Sweden and Denmark are currently cooperating in relation to the shooting that occurred this week near the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm and the explosions carried out near the Israeli diplomatic legation in Copenhagen, Denmark, the latter incident which has been resolved with two defendants aged 16 and 19.

A few months ago, Swedish Intelligence warned that Tehran was recruiting members of Swedish criminal gangs to commit “acts of violence” against Israeli interests, although the Iranian Government denied these accusations.

Sources close to the matter have indicated to the Swedish television network SVT that the latest attacks against Israeli embassies had been ordered by a Swedish criminal gang allegedly following orders from Iran.
