Eighteen dead and “many missing” in heavy floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina: “Only minaret of mosque still visible”

Eighteen people have been killed by floods and mudslides in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is evident from an update provided by a spokesperson for the Mostar police on Friday. There are still many missing people.

The mountain area up to 70 kilometers north of the city of Mostar has been particularly affected. After heavy rainfall, several rivers overflowed their banks. A mudslide occurred in the village of Jablanica, affecting many houses. “Only the minaret of the mosque was still visible,” the news site klix.ba wrote.

Sixteen bodies have been recovered in Jablanica. Emergency workers also found two victims in the more northern village of Fojnica.

Jablanica was cut off from the outside world for hours: country roads were no longer passable and water washed away the earth under train tracks. Elsewhere, rescue services had to use boats to take people to safety. More flooding is expected in the Balkan country this weekend.
