Citizens of Kazakhstan supported the construction of a nuclear power plant

On October 6, Kazakhstan held a referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant. 63.36 citizens of Kazakhstan took part in the voting, 71.12% of them expressed support for the construction of a nuclear power plant.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking to reporters at the polling station, said that if the Kazakh people support the construction of a nuclear power plant, the project should be entrusted to an international consortium of companies with the most advanced technologies.

The proposed location for the construction of the nuclear power plant is the village of Ulken on the shores of Lake Balkhash. The project has many opponents, guided not only by environmental, but also political motives. In their opinion, if the station is built by Rosatom, it will increase Kazakhstan’s dependence on Russia.
