A teacher on a school trip in Marseille found a bag containing a white powder on Friday. That turned out to be cocaine, the police reported on Friday.
The bag was located on the beach of the Calanque of Sormiou, in the heart of the Calanques National Park, just outside the center of Marseille. A calanque is a type of bay, typical of the Mediterranean coast in France.
The police were informed and confirmed that the bag contained 1.4 kilograms of cocaine. How the bag ended up on the beach remains unclear and is now being further investigated.
Marseille is currently plagued by drug trafficking and violence. Seventeen people have been killed in drug killings since January, including a teenage boy aged 15.
