Baku has extended the term of detention of the former leaders of Artsakh

Baku has extended the detention period of former Artsakh presidents Arkady Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, Arayik Harutyunyan, National Assembly Speaker Davit Ishkhanyan, former Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces Davit Manukyan, former Foreign Minister Davit Babayan and others, who were captured as a result of the military attack on Artsakh on September 19, 2023.

Baku notes that a total of 14 persons have been prosecuted under various articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, and the term of their preventive detention has been extended.

Baku has brought serious charges against the former officials of Artsakh, from terrorism to the formation of illegal armed groups. If the court confirms these charges, they face up to life imprisonment.

At the beginning of October, Baku reported that the former officials of Artsakh were charged with the destruction of historical and cultural monuments. The preliminary investigation of the initiated criminal case has been completed, however, the materials have not yet been sent to the court.

“Now is the stage of getting acquainted with the materials of the criminal case. It takes quite a lot of time, because there are many victims. The accusations are quite serious: they are accusations of separatism, destruction of our historical and cultural monuments”, said the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan, Kamran Aliyev, without specifying when the case will reach the court.
