Lüneburg – While searching for the missing student Aurel S. (19), a team from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) came across a man’s body in the Ilmenau River. It has not yet been confirmed whether this is Aurel S.: “A final identification of the body is still pending,” the police say.
The 19-year-old was late Friday night around 11 p.m a student party in the clubhouse disappeared at the campsite in Melbeck (Lower Saxony). The Ilmenau River is nearby, which is why emergency services assumed an accident from the start. There is no evidence of a violent crime, police spokesman Kai Richter told BILD.
In the past few days, the rescuers had searched the area around the campsite extensively. This was as unsuccessful as a search with sonar boats.
On Wednesday, a DLRG team crossed the river as a human chain and discovered the lifeless body at 6:15 p.m. The police: “The further circumstances surrounding the cause of death can only be conclusively clarified after an autopsy has been requested in the next few days.”
The investigators are in close contact with the 19-year-old’s relatives and with pastoral care.
