as is. /(dpa) The Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris distanced herself from incumbent Joe Biden in an interview with the TV channel Fox News. Harris said on Wednesday evening (local time) that she did not want to continue Biden’s policies if she won the election.

As Joe Biden’s incumbent Vice President, Harris is repeatedly blamed for the failings of the incumbent government. She was also accused of shying away from the media and critical questions. Since she was named the official Democratic candidate in August, Harris has given several interviews – including with CNN, CBS and ABC News. However, the stations are all considered liberal and tend to be more favorable to Democrats.

First appearance on a conservative station

On Wednesday evening, Harris ventured into a program with the conservative channel Fox News. In the TV interview she had a heated exchange with presenter Bret Baier. During the conversation, which lasted around 30 minutes, things kept getting loud.

Baier put Harris under pressure right at the beginning of the interview with several questions about migration. As US Vice President, Harris is responsible, among other things, for the issue of immigration. Her Republican rival Donald Trump repeatedly attacks the 59-year-old on this issue and accuses her of failing.

Baier asked how many migrants had been allowed into the country in the past three and a half years or whether she regretted the Biden-Harris government’s early decisions on migration policy. Or whether she owes an apology to the families of women murdered by migrants. «First of all, let me say that these are tragic cases. There’s no doubt about it,” Harris replied. The US migration system has been broken for a long time. Congress is responsible for fixing it, Harris said, accusing Republicans and Trump of blocking solutions.

Harris wants to bring in “fresh, new ideas.”

The moderator then turned the conversation to incumbent President Joe Biden. “When did you first notice that President Biden’s mental abilities seemed to be diminished?” Baier asked. Harris paused and then replied: She had met Biden at least once a week for three and a half years and she had no concerns.

When asked what distinguishes her from Biden, Harris deliberately distanced herself: “Let me be clear that my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency.” Like every new person in the office, she will bring her life experience, her professional experience and “fresh, new ideas”. She also represents a new generation and, unlike Biden, has not spent her entire political career in Washington.

The Democrat then tried to direct the conversation to her opponent Trump: The American people are worried about the ex-president, said Harris. The people who would know him best – even his former White House staff – considered the Republican “unsuitable and dangerous” and said he “should never be president of the United States again.”

Trump’s campaign team responded immediately to Harris’ comments. It called the interview a fiasco and described Harris as “angry and defensive.” The Washington Post, however, wrote that the TV appearance was an “extraordinary moment” in an already turbulent election campaign.
