Cholera in Lebanon: First case detected. WHO calls for urgent action

Lebanese health authorities confirmed the first case of cholera this week amid the escalating conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. Cholera is an infectious disease accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting, and is spread through water contamination, for example when water supplies are contaminated with faeces. The risk of an outbreak always exists when many people have to live together in insufficiently hygienic conditions.

In Lebanon, more than a million people have been displaced by Israeli attacks in the fight against Hezbollah. Many live in cramped conditions in shelters or outdoors and do not have access to the same water.

A disease dangerous for children’s lives

Cholera broke out in Lebanon for the first time in more than 30 years in October 2022. More than 8,000 suspected cases of cholera were recorded, and 23 people died before the end of the epidemic in June 2023. The disease is particularly dangerous. for the life of small children.

Human testing and water sample review are currently underway. In collaboration with partner organizations, WHO is trying to provide more of the same drinking water and improve wastewater disposal. In addition, moreć imported medical materials for the treatment of those infected with cholera.

The cholera vaccination campaign lasted from the beginning of August, but was interrupted due to the escalation of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
