Migrants and the ‘safe countries’ problem, EU towards common list

The European Commission is “looking” at the possibility of drawing up an EU list of third countries considered safewhich currently does not exist (each country draws up its own). An outstretched hand towards the Italian government and a step that could resolve, from a legislative point of view, the issue of the transfer of migrants on the ‘Albania model’.

The Italy-Albania agreement is in fact encountering difficulties precisely because of the concept of a safe third country, as outlined by a recent ruling by the EU Court of Justice.

“At EU level – explains Anitta Hipper, spokesperson for migration – we do not have a common list, but it is something that is also foreseen in the pact for migration and asylum, to ensure that we have common criteria. It is something that we’re watching.” However, adds chief spokesman Eric Mamer, “first we need to have a college of commissioners in place. It’s an ongoing process, so it’s a little early to start thinking about the timing” of such a decision.
