Doctors’ horror in Uppsala: 33 women’s uterus was removed unnecessarily

Doctors’ horror in Sweden! In Uppsala, 33 women had to undergo a hysterectomy, a surgical removal of the uterus, for absolutely no reason. A doctor had noticed cell changes in all of the women. Now we know: These diagnoses were wrong!

Sweden’s Health Minister Acko Ankarberg Johansson (59) is shocked: “A terrible realization!”

The misdiagnoses occurred at the “Akademiska Sjukhuset”, the respected university hospital in Uppsala. In spring 2024 it was noticed that the number of operational Interventions had risen. In April, the hospital management decided to conduct an internal investigation.

► It turned out that there had been a number of misdiagnoses between January 23 and spring 24. Apparently a single employee had analyzed the cell samples without having them examined by one or more other pathologists. The youngest patient was 38 years old, the oldest 85.

Dr. Johan Lugnegård, chief physician at the University Hospital: “We had three pathologists examine the tissue samples. They agreed that they could not detect any cell changes in 33 cases. We deeply regret what happened. The removal of the uterus is a serious intervention with irreversible consequences. It shouldn’t have happened. We apologize to all women affected by this.”

The hospital informed all affected women by telephone and in writing on Monday what had happened. The chief physician: “Most people took it with composure. But of course there will still be some reactions.”

The responsible authority has announced that those affected are entitled to compensation for pain and suffering.
