Israel attacks military targets in Iran
“Our defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized,” it said. “We will do everything we can to defend Israel and the Israeli people.”
Iran had fired around 200 missiles at Israel on October 1, including several hypersonic missiles for the first time. Israel had vowed that Iran would pay for that attack.
The attacks come in the context of heightened tensions in the region due to the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas, and the expansion of the conflict into Lebanon, where the Israeli army is fighting the Shiite militia Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.
Tehran had described the early October attacks as retaliation against Israeli attacks on Lebanon that killed an Iranian general and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
No details are yet known about the precise targets of the Israeli attack or about any casualties. Witnesses reported at least seven explosions, according to Al Jazeera.
Syrian state media also said on Friday night that air defenses downed “enemy targets” near the capital Damascus at the same time Israel carried out the attack.
