Parliamentary elections are being held in Georgia, called “the most important in the history of the country”

In Georgia, on Saturday, October 26, voting is taking place in the parliamentary elections, which is called the most important in the history of the country, since it will determine not only the composition of the next parliament, but also the future vector of the country’s development, reports the BBC.

Georgia is electing a parliament for the first time, having the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU, but this is happening against the backdrop of an unprecedented crisis in Tbilisi’s relations with Western partners and a threat to the country’s European integration.

Georgian voters choose parliament not according to a mixed parliament, as before, but according to a completely proportional system. In order to get into parliament, parties need to overcome the 5% electoral threshold.

Electronic voting will take place at 90% of polling stations, where voters will be identified using electronic means, as well as the counting and transmission of preliminary results.

Georgia received the status of a candidate country for EU accession in December last year. According to polls, about 70-80% of the population consistently support the European future of the country.

“Go to the polls, don’t be afraid of anything, your vote, every vote of yours should decide the future of this country. Let no one stay at home, you decide what tomorrow’s Georgia will be like!” – Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili addressed voters on the eve of the vote.
