Knife stabbing near a school in Beijing

The stabbing incident occurred near the intersection of Wanquanzhuang and Wanlieuzhong streets, in Haidian district, northwest of Beijing city, at about 3:20 p.m. today, China Central Television (CCTV) quoted information from police said.

The suspect, surnamed Duong, 50 years old, used a knife to attack passersby, injuring five victims, including three children. Police controlled the suspect and took the victims to the hospital, none of them were in critical condition.

Chinese police are continuing to investigate the incident. The location of the attack is near the Zhongguancun No. 3 primary school branch, considered one of Beijing’s flagship schools.

Some Chinese social media accounts said the suspect stabbed a knife right in front of the school gate, but the information has not been confirmed. Trung Quan Thon No. 3 Primary School has not yet commented on the information.

Knife crime is a problem in China, especially at schools. Knife attacks often occur at schools in many provinces and cities, with the suspect’s motive often being “revenge on society”, according to AFP.

Knife attacks on schools continue to occur, even though city officials have increased school security and surveillance of public places. On October 18, a 10-year-old boy of Japanese origin was killed in a stabbing incident at a school in Shenzhen.

In May, a woman used a knife to stab 10 people, injuring and killing two people at a primary school in Guixi city, Jiangxi province. Also this month, a man attacked with a knife at a hospital in Yunnan province, leaving two people dead and 21 injured.
