Harris against Trump, the day of truth. The eyes of the world on them

Today is Election Day, the day on which the United States will indicate the new President, and never like this time has thethe choice of millions of Americans will also have repercussions on the world. From the crisis in the Middle East to the conflict in Ukraine and the future of NATO, international observers expect an impact from Washington.

But in the meantime the two candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, are beating the key states in search of the last available votes, those capable of breaking a balance which, according to polls, appears unprecedented, but which the real results could disprove. Harris is attending five events in Pennsylvania, where she will end in the evening with a rally attended by Lady Gaga. Trump is visiting three states: North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan, where he will conclude his election campaign. Meanwhile, almost 79 million Americans have already voted, either by mail or by going to the polls in advance.

The tones of the two challengers remain opposed: Harris also underlined her call for the country’s unity in the afternoon, reiterated her battle in favor of the right to abortion and gave support to the economic agenda carried out by President Joe Biden. Trump continued to paint the nation in dark colors and make new threats on immigration. Speaking in North Carolina, the tycoon announced that he will impose duties of 25 percent on all imports from Mexico if the country bordering the United States to the south does not implement measures to block the exodus of migrants.

But tariffs remain a measure that economists consider dangerous, because the cost of tariffs would fall on consumers, driving inflation crazy. “Today – Trump told his supporters – you have to get up and tell Kamala that you have had enough. Kamala, get out of here, you are fired.”

According to CNN, members of the tycoon’s staff they “begged” the former President to contain his messagesafter confessing on Sunday that he should not have left the White House despite the defeat in 2020 and that he would not feel sorry if someone were to shoot journalists. Harris, speaking in Allentown, a Pennsylvania city with a Hispanic majority, recalled the racial insults hurled at Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday and appealed to Latinos to vote.

In a few hours, an unprecedented electoral campaign will end, in which first there were the two oldest candidates in the history of American politics, then marked by gaffes and oversights on the part of Trump and Biden, amidst attacks and a change in the running within the ranks of the Democrats. It’s been 720 days since Trump announced he would run for the White House again, 106 since Biden ended his campaign and 91 since Harris officially clinched the nomination from the Democrats. There remain many polls that outline a neck-and-neck race with seven key states to win: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada. Vote counting will begin on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. The first results in some states should arrive when it is early morning in Italy.
