A presidential campaign marked by tumult and discord nears its end on Election Day, as Americans decide whether to carry Donald Trump back in the White House or if they elevate Kamala Harris to the Oval Office. The key to the next president of the United States will likely be in the key state of Pennsylvaniawhere the polls give a tie.
Polls opened across the country Tuesday morning, as voters faced a difficult choice between two candidates who have offered starkly different temperaments and visions for the planet’s largest economy and dominant military power.
Harristhe Democratic vice president would be the first female president if elected. He has promised to work with both parties to address economic concerns and other issues.without radically deviating from the course set by President Joe Biden. Trump, The former Republican president has promised to replace thousands of federal workers with those loyal to him, impose extensive tariffs on allies and enemies alike, and carry out the largest deportation operation in United States history.
Both candidates spent the last hours of the campaign in Pennsylvania, the most disputed state. They were trying to encourage their base, as well as Americans who were still undecided or debating whether or not to vote.
“It’s important, it’s my civic duty and it’s important that I vote, for myself and for democracy and the country that I’ve supported for 22 years of my life,” said Ron Kessler, 54, an Air Force veteran. of Pennsylvania who said this is his second time voting.
Harris and Trump entered Election Day focused on seven battleground states, five of which Trump won in 2016 before swinging to Biden in 2020: the so-called “blue wall” composed of Pennsylvania, Michigan y Wisconsinas well as Arizona y Georgia. Nevada y North Carolinawhere Democrats and Republicans won respectively in the last two elections, were also closely contested.
The closeness of the race and the number of states at stake increased the probability that, once again, a winner will not be known on election night. There was a first omen in the town of Dixville Notch in New Hampshire, which traditionally votes after midnight on Election Day. Dixville Notch was split between Trump and Harris, with three votes each.
In the 2020 presidential race, four days passed before a winner was declared. However, Trump has baselessly claimed that if he lost, it would be due to a fraud. Harris’ campaign team was preparing for the former president to try to declare victory before a winner was known Tuesday night or seek to challenge the result if she wins. Four years ago, Trump launched a campaign to overturn the will of the voters that ended in the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol.
Trump plans to vote in his adopted state of Florida on Tuesday, and spend the day at his Mar-a-Lago estate before attending a party at a nearby convention center. Harris already voted by mail in California, her home state. She will be at a viewing party at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington.
Each candidate would take the country to new ground
Harris60, would be the first woman, the first black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the top position. She would also be the first sitting vice president to win the White House in 32 years.
His victory would cap a dizzying campaign unlike any other in American history. Harris rose to the top of the Democratic ticket less than four months ago, after Bidenfacing enormous pressure from his party after a disastrous debate performance, ended his re-election bid.
Trump78, would be the oldest president ever elected. He would also be the first defeated president in 132 years to win another term in the White House, and the first person convicted of a felony to serve in the Oval Office.
After leaving Washington and being abandoned by some of his allies after January 6, Trump defeated younger rivals in Republican primaries and consolidated the support of long-standing allies and harsh critics within his party. He narrowly survived an assassination attempt at a rally in July. Secret Service agents thwarted a second attempt in September.
A Trump victory would confirm that enough voters failed to heed the warnings of many of Trump’s former advisers or instead prioritized the administration’s concerns about the economy or the U.S.-Mexico border. of Biden y Harris.
This would practically guarantee that the mogul avoids going to prison after being found guilty of hiding payments to silence an adult film actress during his first presidential campaign in 2016. His sentencing in that case could occur this month. And by taking office, Trump could end the federal investigation into his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The election has huge implications for the United States and the world
The potential turbulence of a second Trump term has been magnified by his embrace of the most right wing of the Republican Party and his disregard for established democratic norms.
Trump has used harsh rhetoric against Harris and other Democrats, calling them “demonic,” and has hinted that he might take military action against people he calls “enemies within.”
Harris, noting warnings from Trump’s former advisers, has labeled him a “fascist” and blamed him for endangering women’s lives by nominating three of the judges who overturned Roe v. Wade. In the final hours of the campaign, he attempted to adopt a more positive tone and spent the entire final Monday without mentioning his Republican opponent’s name.
As Election Day approaches, federal, state and local officials expressed confidence in the integrity of the nation’s election systems. However, they were prepared to face what they say is an unprecedented level of foreign disinformation, particularly from Russia and Iran, as well as the possibility of physical violence or cyberattacks.
Both sides have armies of lawyers in anticipation of potential legal challenges during and after Election Day. And law enforcement agencies across the country are on high alert for possible violence.
The outcome of the race is being watched closely around the world, as at stake is the future of American support for Ukraine, America’s loyalty to its global alliances, and the nation’s commitment to standing up to autocrats.
Harris has vowed to continue supporting kyiv’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Trump has harshly criticized Ukraine, praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and suggested he would encourage Russia to attack U.S. allies. in NATO whom Trump considers defaulters.
Voters across the country will also decide thousands more races ranging from control of Congress to state ballot measures on abortion access.
More than 82 million people voted early, less than the record set during the pandemic in 2020, when Trump encouraged Republicans to stick to voting on Election Day. This time, he urged his voters to secure their ballots in advance and they complied in droves.
