Ok from the Council of Campania to the third term, wall of the Democratic Party

The Regional Council of Campania approves by majority the bill that could pave the way for third consecutive mandate for Vincenzo De Luca. The measure obtained 33 votes in favour, 16 against and one abstention. The proposed law ‘Provisions regarding ineligibility for the office of President of the Regional Council, in transposition of article 2, paragraph 1, letter F of law 2 July 2004 n. 165’, transposing the national law, provides that “those who, at the end of the second mandate, have already held this position continuously for two consecutive mandates cannot be immediately re-elected to the office of president of the Regional Council”, and that, “the calculation of the mandates starts from the one in progress to the date of entry into force of this law”, i.e. 15 days after its publication in the official bulletin of the Campania Region.

Following the approval of the law, the ‘counting’ of De Luca’s mandates as president of the Campania Region would therefore start from the one currently underway, which began with the 2020 election, without counting the previous one, which started with the 2015 election In this way the governor could run again for the presidency of the Region during the next electoral deadline, set for 2025.

Pd: no to the third term, De Luca will not be the candidate

“We take note of the vote of the Campania Regional Council which in fact opens up the possibility of a third mandate for the current President of the Region. However, it must be clear that the vote expressed today does not shift the position of the national Democratic Party by a millimeter on the limit of two mandates for monocratic positions, therefore, beyond today’s vote, Vincenzo De Luca will not be the candidate for President supported by the Democratic Party in the next regional elections”. This was underlined in a note by Igor Taruffi, head of organization in the national secretariat of the Democratic Party.
