The defeat of Democrat Kamala Harris in the United States presidential elections will mean delaying the arrival of the first woman to the White House for at least four years. Harris was the second woman, after Hillary Clinton, to try to break this glass ceiling and, like her partner, she has fallen short.

The vice president especially appealed during the campaign to the vote of women to try to contain the Republican Donald Trump, involved for years in all kinds of sexist controversies. He also advocated preserving basic rights such as abortion, in the face of an ultra-conservative onslaught of cuts.

The Democratic Party has preserved the female vote, but also in this area it has suffered the erosion that the polls had been reflecting. 54 percent of women supported Harris in the elections, according to an exit poll published by ABC News, which reflects a three-point decline compared to 2020, when the candidate was Joe Biden.

Trump is ten points behind Harris among women, the same difference that the tycoon obtains in his favor if only the votes cast by men are examined.

In the case of the young population, the Democratic candidate has a slight advantage of two points among men – 49 versus 47 percent – which shoots up to 26 points among women, according to the aforementioned survey.

Harris already made history four years ago as the first female vice president of the United States, but starting in January the main positions of power will once again be occupied by men. Trump will return to the White House led by Senator JD Vance, who will occupy the vice presidency.

The Republicans are also on track to revalidate their majority in the House of Representatives, which will allow them to retain the presidency of this body, the third highest-ranking position in the North American country. Currently, it is also held by a man, Mike Johnson.

In the outgoing legislature, only 28.3 percent of the seats in the federal Congress are occupied by women and the figure drops to 25 percent in the case of the Senate. In any case, it is a record, as is the fact that there are twelve women governors, according to the Center for Women and Politics in the United States (CAWP).
