During a search of the police chief’s house in the Madrid suburb of Alcalá de Henares, investigators found more than 20 million euros. The money was hidden in the walls and is said to have come from drug deals. Additional cash amounting to around one million euros was seized from the police chief’s office.

The investigation leading to the arrests was carried out by an internal affairs unit of the National Police. This operation is led by the National Court of Justice. The investigating judge ordered pre-trial detention for all 15 people arrested.
