The Netherlands will start checks at the borders with Belgium and Germany from December 9

The Netherlands will start checks at the borders with Belgium on Monday, December 9. Minister of Asylum Marjolein Faber (PVV) reported this on Monday. This is a temporary measure of six months against “irregular migration and migrant smuggling”. The government had already announced the checks earlier.

The minister emphasizes that commuters and economic traffic will be “inconvenienced as little as possible”, without stating how. According to Faber, there is contact with the border regions about this.

The plan is to only carry out border checks at airports on specific flights “where there is a risk of irregular migration or cross-border crime”.

To carry out border controls, the Royal Military Police, a part of the Dutch army that also carries out police tasks, is not allocated extra money or personnel. The number of checks will be gradually increased. According to Faber, this depends on the available capacity of the military police.

Faber has informed the European Commission, the Council of Ministers, the EU member states and the European Parliament about the plan. This must be done four weeks in advance, European legislation requires.

In the government agreement, the PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB have agreed to carry out border controls. In the asylum deal concluded by the coalition parties last month, it was agreed to start this year.

France has been carrying out checks at its borders since November 1.
