Volleyball Champions League: BR Volleys critical after victory: “Too many mistakes made”

Despite the victory at the start of the group phase of the Champions League, the Berlin Volleys players were not completely satisfied. “For my taste, we as a team and I myself made too many mistakes,” said main attacker Jake Hanes after the 3-1 win against Slovenia’s champions ACH Volley Ljubljana. The 2.12 meter tall American’s realization: “It must be clear to all of us that every game in the Champions League is a great challenge.”

The Berliners will have their next appearance in the premier class next Wednesday at the Greenyard Maaseik. The Belgian runner-up lost his opening match at PGE Projekt Warsaw, the favorite in this group of four, 0:3 and was virtually outplayed at 9:25 in the first set. But the BR Volleys are not blinded by this result. “We know we have to play a little better in the future,” said libero Kyle Dagostino.

Third set hard fought

The decisive factor for the win against Ljubljana was the particularly hard-fought third set, in which the BR Volleys narrowly won 26:24. In the final phase of this section, setter Johannes Tille and attacker Hanes had almost perfected their cooperation on the field. In the decisive phase, Hanes brought the Berliners closer to winning the set point by point. “That’s my job,” said the 26-year-old, modestly deflecting all praise.
