Trump plans to appoint Cuban-American Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State

US President-elect Donald Trump plans to offer the important portfolio of Secretary of State to the Cuban-American senator from Florida Marco Rubio as reported this Monday by the newspaper The New York Times.

Citing sources close to Trump, the Times noted that this decision could still change, but the choice of Rubio, 53, seems likely, especially after the former president considered naming the senator as his running mate, before finally opting for JD Vance.

The Miami Republican was elected to the Senate in 2010 and has maintained a position as hawk in foreign policy, adopting hard lines on China and Iran in particular and expressing a position in favor of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Rubio, who speaks perfect Spanish, can also be of great support for the Trump Administration’s foreign policy for Latin America and its strategic objectives.

However, some conservatives considered him vacillating on immigration, an issue that caused him political problems when he ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 against Trump and others.

During that campaign, Trump belittled him by calling him ‘Little Marco’, and Rubio responded with scathing attacks.

The senator’s name was already being considered to lead American diplomacy, given that he was on the list of possible vice presidents for a second term for the Republican.

Rubio, of Cuban origin, exerted a notable influence on the policy towards Latin America of Trump’s first term from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but some advisors of the future president believe that his ‘hawk’ profile contrasts with the isolationist policy of ‘ ‘America first’ that Trump promotes.
