Submarine data cable between Finland and Germany defective

A submarine data cable in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Germany is defective. This was reported by the Finnish company Cinia, the operator of the almost 1,200 kilometer long cable.

The cable is no longer intact since Monday morning, it sounds. The communication connections over the cable are therefore interrupted. What exactly is going on is now being investigated. “That is currently impossible to say,” said a top executive of the company when asked whether there was sabotage.

Extern

It is clear that the cable break – which took place in Swedish waters – was caused by an “external” event. This could be, for example, an anchor or a dragnet, says Cinia. It is also unclear how long it will take before the cable is repaired.

The data cable is the only one that directly connects Finland to Central Europe. The Finns remain connected to the internet via several cables that run through Sweden. There is no impact on Finnish internet traffic.

A year ago, a gas pipeline and a data cable between Finland and Estonia were damaged. This may have been caused by an anchor from a Chinese ship.
