Violent riot in the parliament: dozens of lawmakers brawled in Serbia
Dozens of lawmakers exchanged blows yesterday (Monday) in a violent brawl in the parliament in Belgrade, Serbia. The fight broke out during a protest by members of the opposition against the Prime Minister and the President, following a roof collapse disaster at the train station in the city of Novi Sad that claimed the lives of 15 people.”Murderers, murderers”, the members of the opposition called the members of the government, especially its leader Milos Vučević, and the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić. Members of the opposition waved signs with red hands in protest of the omission, which was seen in Serbia as a clear symbol of nepotism and corruption by members of the ruling party.

The confrontation began when Radomir Lazovic, a member of the opposition Green Party, approached the podium in the parliament with the red hand sign. Minister of Health Jatibor Loncher approached him and began to confront him verbally. At this point, many additional legislators from both political camps advanced towards them and thus the spirits heated up. Some of them also waved a picture of President Vučić with red hands.

At the beginning of November, a roof collapsed at the train station in the city of Novi Sad in Serbia, injuring dozens of people. 15 were killed and more were injured. A major reason for the anger of the opposition in the country is the fact that Prime Minister Vucevic was the mayor of Novi Sad when the work to build the collapsed roof began.

Last week, 12 people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident, including a former minister in the Serbian government. Despite this, there is great anger due to the fact that the investigation does not concern anyone from the ruling party. The opposition attacked the police for allegedly “waiting a long time” before starting to arrest suspects. The opposition is calling for Prime Minister Vucevic to resign from his position. The Serbian ruling party denies everything and all the accusations directed against them.
