Putin approved a record military budget

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on the federal budget for 2025-2027. In accordance with it, state expenditures in 2025 will amount to 40.3 trillion rubles (380 billion dollars at the current exchange rate), and expenses will be 41.47 trillion rubles.

As Radio Liberty notes, spending on military needs in 2025 will amount to 13.5 trillion rubles. This is about 41% of the country’s total spending, which is more than funding for health care, education, social policy and the national economy combined.

13.5 trillion rubles is a record amount in the entire post-Soviet history of Russia. The previous record was set in 2024 – it amounted to 10.4 trillion. But then it was assumed that next year military spending would decline, dropping to 8.5 trillion rubles. The reduction is now planned for 2026.

Another 3.459 trillion rubles will be spent on national security. This is the budget of the police, the Russian National Guard, special services, and the Investigative Committee. It is proposed to balance the budget with the help of tax reform and devaluation of the ruble.
