The last month of the year has begun and traditionally that means end-of-year lists. The encyclopedic website Wikipedia has also created an annual overview and that list shows what information we were looking for in the past year.

In total, about 2.4 billion hours were read on English Wikipedia pages. That corresponds to almost 275,000 years. This is evident from the data from The Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that keeps the encyclopedia running.

The most popular page visited in English in the past year is the one about who all died in 2024. That page was viewed 44,440,344 times. This is followed by US Vice President Kamala Harris with 28,960,278 page views. That is one million times more than the American presidential election itself. Fourth place goes to Lyle and Erik Menendez. The brothers murdered both their parents in 1989 and their story was made into a film by streaming platform Netflix in 2024. Donald Trump, who won the presidential election in the United States, finished in fifth place with 25,293,855 page views.

This year’s top 25 includes 10 pages belonging to politicians from the United States and India. There were elections in both countries this year. Eight pages from that top 20 are dedicated to pop culture. This includes the Menedez brothers, but also Taylor Swift, Sean Combs and Liam Payne.

In the sports category, the Olympic Games in Paris were very popular, but the Indian Premier League is just that little bit more popular. The UEFA Euro 2024 is the 15 most visited page of the year. And footballer Christiano Ronalde also remains one of the strongest holders within the Wikipedia world.
