South Korea’s parliament will vote on impeachment on Saturday

The National Assembly of South Korea will vote on Saturday (7) on an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol.

According to information from The Korea Times, the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), wants the vote to take place at around 7pm (7am on Saturday Brasília time).

The DPK and other opposition parties have 192 seats, which will require eight deputies from Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) to vote in favor of the dismissal for it to happen.

“We want to give PPP deputies enough time to deliberate on their decision on the unconstitutional coup attempt or treason charge against Yoon. Now is the time to act according to conscience, not based on political interests,” said Rep. Jo Seoung-lae, DPK spokesperson.

The impeachment request must be voted on within 24 to 72 hours after being presented.

On Wednesday, Yoon declared martial law in South Korea on the grounds of protecting the “constitutional order” and accused the DPK of being “pro-North Korea.” Shortly afterwards, the National Assembly voted to repeal the measure, which the president, who has been in office since May 2022, subsequently withdrew.
