Although Russia is known as an ally of the Syrian regime, and has already announced its support for the rebel attacks in Syria recently, some still associate Russia’s loose support, compared to the past, with what is happening in Syria today.
The Russian political researcher, Yevgeny Sidrov, was interviewed last night (Friday) by the Arabic channel “El Arabi”, and said that “the regime is definitely collapsing. Otherwise how do you explain what is happening by attacking the armed factions and taking over Aleppo, and maybe very soon also in the city of Homs?”
Regarding Russia, he claimed that “it seems that there was an agreement that preceded these developments between several regional parties, and now Russia continues to support it.” When asked about the names of those regional parties, he said that “if their names were published, there might be very negative reactions. We have no facts that indicate involvement in any of the regions.”
He later noted that “Some say that Turkey, perhaps quietly, encouraged such progress. We do not see news there about many murders as a result of any conflicts, they do not exist. Therefore, there is a perception that the withdrawal of the regular Syrian forces was not just a coincidence, but part of the plan which preceded these developments with unclear scenarios.”
“Tomorrow, Russia, Turkey and Iran will meet at the so-called ‘Astana Forum’. They should come out with a statement that must include a direct and precise reference to how the crisis in Syria can be overcome, and call for a dialogue between all parties in Syrian society to reach a final settlement this time.”
