US President Joe Biden called the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria a “fundamental act of justice.” He noted that the Syrian people have a historic opportunity to determine their destiny.
“The United States will work with partners, as well as with groups inside Syria, to help Syrians realize this opportunity and manage the risks,” the president said, adding that the administration will send representatives to the region, including to ensure the protection of American troops in Syria.
Biden recalled the numerous victims of the Bashar al-Assad regime, but noted that the coalition that overthrew him also includes groups involved in terrorist activities. “The administration will support Syria during the transition, but will monitor the words and actions of these groups,” he said.
“For many years, Iran, Russia and Hezbollah provided support to the Syrian regime, but in recent weeks this support has collapsed. But let’s not forget why this happened. After the Hamas attack on Israel, Iran and its satellites made a mistake – they decided to go against Israel war,” he said.
