We finally have a chance to get to our oil fields in Syria, they are Croatian property, and those fields are worth billions of dollars, said Davor Štern, an energy expert, adding that now we just have to wait for Syria to recognize and America and Europe lift sanctions.
– The only question is which group is now in that area. But Syria will soon take the form of a state and everything will depend on the skill of our politics to bring those fields back. At one time, INA did not hear about it, but it is Croatian property and we have the right to those fields. They didn’t even enter into negotiations with Mola when Ina was being sold – said Štern.
The fields are located within the Hayan oil and gas block with a total area of about 4,500 square kilometers. The block is located in the desert in the central part of Syria, about 250 kilometers from Damascus. Ina established the Hayan block, which consists of six oil and gas fields, in 1998.
The Jazal oil-gas-condensate field was discovered in 2006, and the Mazrur field with the same characteristics was discovered two years later. In 2007, the Jazal field was equipped with a pipeline and connected to the Jihar oil station. Production in this field started in November 2007.
Every month, INA earned 65 million dollars from Syrian production, or almost 780 million dollars a year. Ina has invested one billion dollars in the research and development of these fields.
