Finished the searches in the infamous Sednaya prison ‘slaughterhouse’north of Damascus. The White Helmets made this known, specifying that no other detainees were found in the complex, which has become a symbol of the brutality of Bashar al Assad’s regime.
“The search did not reveal any open or hidden areas within the structure,” the Syrian civil defense organization said in a statement, specifying that it had completed a systematic search of the vast complex, looking for secret cells, hidden basements and checking the courtyards and the surrounding areas of the prison, after insurgents who entered Damascus at dawn on Sunday opened the prison gates.
Five teams, including two police K9 dog units, were involved in searching entrances, exits, ventilation shafts, sewage systems, water pipes, surveillance cameras. Despite efforts, no hidden or sealed areas were identified. “We share the profound disappointment of the families of the thousands of people still missing and whose fate remains unknown,” the White Helmets said.
Approximately 150,000 people in total were imprisoned in the facilitywhich is known among Syrians as the “slaughterhouse” for brutality and torture also committed against thousands of civilians arrested just because they were opponents of the regime.
