Mausoleum of Hafiz al-Assad set on fire in Syria

A video made in the city of Kardaha, the “family nest” of the Assad clan, is being circulated on social networks. It shows militants setting fire to the tomb of Hafiz al-Assad, who was president of Syria from 1971 to 2000.

Bashar al-Assad’s elder brother Basil is also buried in the mausoleum. It was he who should succeed his father as head of state, but in 1994 he died in a car accident. Bashar, an ophthalmologist by profession who lived in London, had to return to his homeland and prepare to take power.

Note that in Damascus, after the fall of the regime, the presidential palace was looted. Many Assad supporters, fearing reprisals, are trying to escape to other countries, primarily to Lebanon.
