Just over a month after the violent attacks against Israeli football fans in Amsterdam, the public prosecutor’s office has demanded prison sentences of up to two years against the first three defendants. They had committed acts of violence or called for them to be committed said the prosecutor in Amsterdam.
The explosion of violence also shocked internationally. The prosecution sees someone as triggering the violence “Cocktail of causes” from “anti-Semitism, anger over the situation in Gaza and hooligan behavior.”
According to prosecutors, a 32-year-old defendant played a leading role in the attacks. Videos were shown in the courtroom showing the man kicking and punching people. The prosecution called for two years in prison. A prison sentence of six months was required for two other defendants, 19 and 26 years old.
“Hunting Jews”
After an Ajax Amsterdam game against Maccabi Tel Aviv in early November, pro-Palestinian rioters attacked and mistreated Israeli fans. According to the prosecution, calls for a “hunt for Jews” were made in digital chat groups.

The acts of violence also sparked international outrage. Israel and Dutch politicians spoke of anti-Semitic programs. Around 60 victims of the violence are now demanding compensation.
40 suspects
According to the police, Maccabi fans were also violent. They rioted, shouted anti-Arab slogans and tore Palestinian flags from the walls of houses.
Initially, seven defendants are on trial. Two of them have a Palestinian background. The men are accused of violence, incitement to violence, anti-Semitism and serious bodily harm. The verdicts are expected in about two weeks. The judiciary is still investigating around 40 people, including Israelis.
