Brazil: operated on at the start of the week, President Lula will undergo a second operation on his skull

Victim of a domestic accident, Brazilian President Lula will undergo “additional surgery” on his skull on Thursday, after a first emergency surgical intervention due to a hemorrhage near the brain, his medical team announced this Wednesday .

“As part of the therapeutic program, he will have an additional operation, with an endovascular intervention (embolization of the middle meningeal artery) tomorrow morning,” explains the medical bulletin of the Syrian-Lebanese hospital in Sao Paulo, where Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 79, underwent surgery on Tuesday.

According to a previous bulletin, Lula fell ill at the end of last week while he was still in Brasilia. Suffering from headache, he underwent an imaging test at the hospital unit in the federal capital, which revealed internal bleeding.

A fall in the bathroom

“The MRI revealed an intracranial hemorrhage resulting from the accident he suffered at his home on October 19. He was transferred to the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, São Paulo Unit, where he underwent a craniotomy to drain the hematoma. The operation took place without incident,” the hospital said at the time.

On October 19, President Lula fell in the bathroom of the official presidential residence and hit the back of his head. He needed five stitches and underwent imaging tests before being allowed home. However, he was asked to cancel long trips in the coming weeks, including a trip to Russia, where he was due to attend the BRICS summit.

During a telephone call with Luiz Caetano, then PT candidate for mayor of Camaçari (BA), Lula described the accident as a “stupid thing” he had committed, adding that he had to wait “three or four days”, on medical advice, to know “the extent of the damage caused by the accident”.

The Brazilian president also underwent a total right hip arthroplasty in September 2023, an operation aimed at replacing worn cartilage in this part of the body with a prosthesis.
