Donald Trump wants to begin drastically changing the policies of his predecessor Joe Biden on the first day of his presidency.
In the first few hours after his swearing in on January 20th, he is planning a flood of more than 25 executive orders and directives, according to the news agency Reuters learned from several insiders. They should particularly target these areas immigration and Energy.
Executive orders can be challenged in court
According to the future president’s ideas, the orders on “Day One” in the White House should have a “big impact,” according to two people in the know. “The American people can rest assured that President Trump will use his executive authority on Day One to fulfill the promises he made during the campaign,” Trump’s spokeswoman said Caroline Leavitt asked about the plans.
US presidents often use the option of decrees to fulfill campaign promises and quickly get their political projects on track without having to go through the lengthy legislative process in Congress. However, these “executive orders” can be challenged in court, and usually the money allocated for implementation must be approved by Congress. But there are dozens of measures that Trump can take with the stroke of a pen.
When Trump first became US president in 2017, he issued only a handful of such orders on the first day. With Biden, on the other hand, there were 17 in one fell swoop when he took over from Trump in 2021. Most were aimed at reversing policy decisions made by the first Trump presidency.
One of the insiders familiar with the Trump team’s plans said internally they were aware that any action would require a tremendous amount of coordination between the government agencies involved. This could lead to delays and reduce the total number of orders on the first day. Regardless, according to insiders, numerous further orders and directives are planned in the days and weeks afterwards.
The coordination lies with Stephen Miller, a long-time Trump employee who will be one of the leading advisors in the White House. The Trump team is working with draft lists provided by groups such as the America First Policy Institute, a think tank founded in 2021 to promote Trump’s policies and ideas, as well as the Conservative Partnership Institute and the Heritage Foundation.
Building the wall “YES” – protection for trans people in schools “NO”
It can be assumed that Trump will primarily take measures to curb immigration on the first day of his term in office, the insiders said. He is expected to sign decrees that will give immigration officials more leeway in making arrests and increase personnel at the border with Mexico. The construction of the border wall should also be resumed. In an interview with the station NBC Trump has also stated that he will attempt to overturn the law by executive order that allows children born on U.S. soil to be treated regardless of their parents’ immigration status automatically receive US citizenship. In connection with this project alone, Trump’s advisors are preparing for waves of lawsuits.
According to the insiders, the regulations will also include an initiative to increase energy production and implement Trump’s frequently uttered campaign slogans “Drill, baby, drill” and “Frack, frac, frac.”
Critical Race Theory is a thorn in Trump’s side
Trump also announced a number of other measures for his first day in the White House. For example, he wants to issue an order to cut off federal funding for schools that have the so-called Critical Race Theory teach. The theoretical approach is based on the assumption that racism is firmly anchored in American institutions. It is rarely found on curricula in public schools. Trump also wants to abolish Biden administration guidelines to protect transgender students.
But work on some executive orders still appears to be unclear, said several people with knowledge of the internal processes in Trump’s so-called transition team, which is preparing to take office. It is also not yet completely clear which decrees will actually be issued on the first day. Trump has also planned other measures for “Day One”. He has held out the prospect of a pardon for rioters who were involved in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
