Tornado hits northern California: thousands of families in San Francisco without power

A tornado struck northern California on Saturday, downing trees and destroying cars and power lines. The National Weather Service (NWS) and local media report this.

Santa Cruz County, south of San Francisco, was hit hard. Photos on social media show overturned cars and a mass of water. The NWS issued a storm warning for the area. Residents were warned to stay away from the many beaches in the area.

The winter storm front also caused massive power outages in California. In San Francisco alone, 13,000 households were without power. More than 170,000 customers were affected by power outages across the state.
