CEO assassinated in New York, Mangione risks the death penalty

Luigi Mangione planned to kill the CEO of UnitedHealtcare since August. This is what the investigators declared, who read the notes written by Mangione in his diary. In a note dated August 15, the suspected killer had written that he was “happy” to postpone the preparation because “this would have allowed us to know more about him”, a reference to top manager Brian Thompson, later killed on December 4 in Manhattan.

“The objective – he wrote again – is insurance”. In a memo dated October 22, investigators found references to an investor conference that was scheduled to take place six weeks later in which Mangione said he would target the “CEO of one of the companies that would be taking part.” Thompson was killed Dec. 4 in Manhattan as he was walking to the Hilton, where he was scheduled to attend a convention with investors.

After his arrest last week, Mangione said through his lawyer that he would contest extradition to New York. Today in court in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, Mangione, handcuffed, clean-shaven and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, made a brief statement and waived his right to oppose the extradition request.

A Manhattan jury indicted Mangione for murder as act of terrorism for Thompson’s death. The 26-year-old faces 11 charges in New York, including one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, along with other charges of weapons possession and forgery, it says the indictment.

The prosecution defined the murder as an “act of terrorism” because, according to the prosecutor’s office, the attack was intended to influence government policies and intimidate civilians. The Hollidaysburg courtroom, US media reported, was packed to the brim with journalists, other observers and about a dozen officers from the New York Police Department, and the jury box had been transformed into a section with standing places.

A small crowd of Mangione supporters gathered outside the courthouse, holding signs in support of the defendant. Several people wore the distinctive green hat worn by the character Luigi from the SuperMario video game series, an image that is increasingly used by Mangione’s supporters.
