Venezuela: Spain says it will do everything it can so that “the will of the Venezuelans triumphs”

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albaressaid this Friday that Spain will do everything in its power so that on January 10, the date on which the new Government of Venezuela“let the will of the Venezuelans triumph” expressed at the polls.

“We are going to do everything in our power, we are doing it now, so that the will of the Venezuelans and let it be peaceful”he indicated in an appearance in the Senate’s Ibero-American Affairs committee, before indicating that he trusts that any solution will be “genuinely Venezuelan”, “peaceful” and that “advances” in democracy.

The head of Spanish diplomacy also criticized the position held by the main opposition party, the conservative People’s Party (PP), in this whole situation, by attacking the president Pedro Sanchez to facilitate the departure of the opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia: “If what you proposed had been done, Edmundo Gonzalez I wouldn’t be free today Madridbut imprisoned in Caracas”.

Albares confirmed minutes before the commission the granting of asylum status to González the distanceexiled in Spain since September and whom the Venezuelan opposition considers the country’s elected president and legitimate winner of the presidential elections held in July.

The popular senator Íñigo Fernández, who regretted that the presence of Spain in Latin America be “ever smaller” and many times “not for the better”, he attacked the minister for not having condemned “publicly“the regime of Nicolas Maduro and not dare to call it a dictatorship.

In his opinion, Spain is acting in a way “very tibia” and cannot continue to be installed “on the screen” that the electoral records must be published, warning the minister that if he wants consensus on this matter “Flirting with left-wing populism is not a good path.”

Before those statements, Albares criticized the PP for worrying so much about the dictatorship in Venezuela and, however, it seems to them “very badly“that the Spanish Government will commemorate next year the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the dictator’s regime Francisco Franco: “don’t go so far to theorize.”

Both the Congress such as the Spanish Senate, as well as the European Parliament and some governments have recognized Gonzalez Urrutia as legitimate president of Venezuela. The Spanish chambers have approved motions urging the Spanish Executive to do so.

The Venezuelan leader, exiled in Madrid after competing for the Presidency of Venezuela and denouncing electoral fraud in the elections last July, has publicly expressed his willingness to return to his country to take office as president even at the risk of being arrested.
