Several people were killed and injured in central and southern Nigeria on Saturday when people trampled each other during food distributions, emergency services confirmed. Children were also among the victims. President Bola Tinubu has canceled all official events.
Deaths occurred, among others, in the city of Abuja, in central Nigeria. Food was distributed to vulnerable and elderly residents at the Catholic Church of Maitama. Ten people were trampled, including four children. Eight people were injured, police officials confirmed.
Rice was distributed in Okija, southern Nigeria, on Saturday. Several people were killed, but an exact number is not known.
Earlier this week, 35 children were killed in drumming at a school party in the city of Ibadan. The president called for security measures at public events to be examined and the rules to be strictly adhered to.
