Famine is spreading in Sudan… and 24 million are in need of assistance

The Sudanese government has suspended its participation in a global hunger monitoring system in a move likely to undermine efforts to address one of the world’s largest hunger crises. In a letter dated December 23, the Sudanese government’s agriculture minister said it had suspended its participation in the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system. The letter accused the interim classification of “issuing unreliable reports that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty.” The report indicates that famine is spreading in at least five regions in Sudan, according to what a United Nations-backed report said yesterday, Tuesday, and is affecting in particular refugee camps and those displaced from the war that has been ongoing for 20 months between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
