Ukraine apparently withdraws Ambassador Makeiev from Germany

The Ukrainian government is withdrawing its Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev according to media reports. His dismissal is part of one greater rotation of diplomats, reports the “European Pravda”. The “Bild” newspaper reports that it has confirmed the information.

Makeiev’s successor should therefore be Yevhen Korniychuk, previously ambassador to Israel. According to European Pravda, this is no surprise, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considers him to be a German expert.

However, the Zelensky government was not satisfied with Makeiev’s work. The report speaks of “systematic criticism”.

Oleksii Makeiev has been ambassador to Germany for two years. His predecessor was Andrij Melnyk who was withdrawn from Berlin after seven years around six months after the start of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine. Melnyk, known for his direct manner, then became Ukrainian ambassador to Brazil.

Melnyk himself sharply criticized Makeiev in May 2023. “He should get his butt up, finally become vocal and deliver results on vital issues such as German fighter jets and warships as well as joining NATO,” said Melnyk in an interview with the editorial network Germany (RND). Melnyk also called on Makeiev to take the justified criticism from Kiev more seriously.
