On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden signed a law making the bald eagle the official national bird of the United States of America, ending 248 years of absence of the official bird in his country’s history. The US Congress unanimously approved the law after several years of debate and postponements. Although the bald eagle is a major symbol in the official seal of the United States, it has not been officially recognized as a national bird. History of Attempts to Recognize the Bald Eagle In 1782, Charles Thompson, who was Secretary of Congress and charged with supervising national designs, submitted a proposal for a design for the Great Seal with a bald eagle in the middle holding a shield decorated with a flag.
