Mozambique: Over 1,500 prisoners escaped from the maximum security prison

33 people were killed and 15 were injured in the mass escape that took place on Christmas Day in the capital of Maputo, reported General Police Chief Bernardino Rafael. The escape took place against the background of violent protests against the election results in the country, in which more than 130 people were killed.

The security forces launched an extensive military operation to capture the fugitives, and have so far succeeded in arresting about 150 prisoners. Security officials in the country express concern about the consequences of the mass escape, especially in light of the fact that some of the escapees are connected to armed groups.

The crisis in Mozambique began after the country’s Constitutional Council declared the victory of the ruling Perlimo party in the elections held on October 9, 2024, and confirmed Daniel Chapo as the new president. The opposition, led by Venancio Mundalan, claims widespread fraud in the elections.

According to expert Adriano Nubonga, as posted on his X account, the events reflect deep problems in Mozambique’s governance and security system. Human Rights Watch documented the use of excessive force by the security forces, including live fire and tear gas against protesters, which led to the death of civilians, including children.

The current crisis raises concerns about the long-term stability of Mozambique, which has been ruled by the Perlimo party since the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975. International organizations, including Amnesty International, are calling for an investigation into the use of lethal force by the security forces and respect for human rights in the country.
