Fee to obtain Italian citizenship becomes more expensive from January

Descendants who wish to apply for recognition of Italian citizenship at a Consulate will pay a more expensive fee in 2025. The amount increased after approval of the Budget Law defined by the Italian Chamber and Senate.

The increase, which should occur in the fees for three copies requiring the “iure sanguinis” (right of blood) procedure, should go from 300 euros to 600 euros (around R$3,870 at the exchange rate on December 28, 2024).

The 100% increase was defined for orders made per person and no longer per process, as it was previously possible for other family members to be included in the same order. Another change concerns descendants who will file an application with an Italian city hall. Previously, no fee was charged, but with the new measure, these people will pay the same 600 euros.

The request for an adjustment comes from right-wing parties that support Giorgia Meloni’s government. The justification is based on the increase in demands on the departments that receive the requests. The objective of increasing the fee is to reduce the number of visits to improve the services offered, in addition to imposing economic barriers to access citizenship.
